How to design an accessible kitchen for the whole family
With a little inspiration, the accessible kitchen can be adjusted to your needs and personal style.
The accessible kitchen is a place where you can transform groceries into delicious dinners, and it can be a room where you invite friends and families for cosy meals - it can be whatever you want it to be. The accessible kitchen should therefore not be a place that restricts your development, but should instead create space for your wishes.
An accessible kitchen is a place where everyone should feel at ease, which is why it should be designed according to you and your design wishes.
Planning the practical kitchen
The design of an adjustable kitchen does not follow the same rules as for bathrooms. This is mainly because the activities in the kitchen do not have the same physical requirements as those in the bathroom.
However, it is very worthwhile planning a practical adjustable kitchen with raised/lowered worktops and cupboards. Here the thought is on increased independence and quality of life for the individual, which benefits all of society.
The design of a practical kitchen with adjustable worktops and cupboards requires thought and knowledge. Pressalit Care works both with researchers in this area and with kitchen manufacturers, and we have collated some excellent advice and guidelines in our "Guide to design - the kitchen". An accessible kitchen should be flexible
With wall cupboards that come out from the wall and down towards the worktop, and worktops to suit your needs and gastronomic creations, the flexibility of the design provides the best work conditions in the kitchen.

Working comfortably
In angled set-ups, work spaces should be placed 600-800 mm from the corner. This ensures that 2 users can work comfortably without getting in each other's way. Users using the sink need a min. of 200 mm free space by the corner.
Minimum counter space
Regardless of whether the kitchen is one-sided or an angle kitchen, you need counter space on either side of the sink, min. 600 mm on one side and min. 400 mm on the other side, for putting utensils etc. Make the most of corner spaces.
